I sure hope that everyone had an extraordinary time at the Rotary Club of Poipu’s wine tasting at Kilohana on Saturday. It was a magnificent night that included great wine, amazing food and fun, fun, fun. For those of you who were really interested in trying a dichotomy of different wines, it was the perfect event.
After the evening was over, I started thinking about all of the comments that I received from enthusiastic wineaux. It was clear that it really did not matter about the price of the bottle, but wine tasters were more concerned with the flavor, character, and the origin of the wine.
That brings me to this part of this blog that I find just fascinating, which is discussing unique wines from different regions that are available at various price points. We have Spanish wines that have excellent value and are known for being bold tasting reds and light fruity whites.
Italy’s diverse wine program, featuring over 10,000 different varietals, offers many options with prices ranging from $14 to $1,000 a bottle. France, which is known for having one of the most magnificent grape growing regions in the world, exports a beautiful bottle of Chardonnay for $17, but you can also pay $17,000 a bottle for an exquisite Bordeaux. Australia is coming up with some luscious Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon blends, and they also have a fair amount of more fruit-friendly white wines. Argentina and Chile are known for their beautiful contributions of Malbec, Bonarda and Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to a stunning white Torrontes. And let’s not forget about our own domestic wines from California, Oregon and Washington to name a few.
If you are looking for more opportunities to enjoy beautiful wines and scrumptious cuisine, please make your reservation for our next Wine Dinner on March 10th at Casa di Amici in Poipu. We hope to see everybody at The Wine Shop!
